One of the world’s most elusive sea creatures was finally captured on film in its natural habitat, and the Discovery Channel and Japan’s NHK are preparing a special to unveil the footage.

Last July, a 10-foot long giant squid (Architeuthis) was observed in the North Pacific Ocean by a squid expert from Japan’s National Science Museum. The discovery was the culmination of a 10 year project that attempted to track and film giant squid– something that researchers have tried and failed to do for decades.

Below is a still from the remarkable discovery:

According to the release, this specimen was seen at depths of up to 3,000 feet and appears to have two of its longest tentacles missing. If intact, the squid would’ve measured approximately 26 feet.

Considering the difficulty of such a mission, one of the more intriguing aspects of this discovery is what kind of equipment was used to film the creature. At a Maker Faire event, underwater photographer Eric Cheng talks about the challenges that come when trying to film deep sea creatures such as the giant squid and the sperm whale.
